Cross River

The anthology takes place in the fictional town of Cross River, Maryland. This story introduces Cross River as a place of mythos: where God, Jesus, and Christ walk amongst man. Cross River is a predominantly black town, and having such divinity present in a black setting gives it distinction from the rest of the United States and its dominant culture. Scott gives its own history and mythology from the racism of the country. Scott therefore elevates Cross River as a unique place while also using its mythology to critique the underlying racism which still exists in the United States.
