Summary

The chapter opens with Toby narrating the immediate aftermath of his attempted suicide. After he recovers enough to hold a lucid conversation, Toby is accused of Rafferty’s murder. However, he is able to evade prison time by emphasizing his own mental fragility. Based on the advice of his solicitor, Toby emphasizes his brain damage in order to evade full culpability. He is sentenced to twelve years in prison, ten of which are suspended (i.e. delayed). The two years of his immediate sentence are spent in a mental hospital. In the hospital, Susanna visits him, as well as his friends, family, and Richard. Susanna tells Toby that she feels that she was always ruthless, and that her murder of Dominic did not change her significantly.
