Chapter 5 Summary

Eddie runs even more now that his dad and Billy are gone. Eddie realizes that he is angry with Billy for dying. Eddie has enrolled in baptism classes and is seeing less of Billy. Eddie goes to his first baptism class. When Tarter suggests that the mark God gave Cain in the bible is the mask that African Americans now wear, Eddie gets angry because he knows that Tarter has crossed a line. Eddie gets up and walks out of the room.

Eddie is so angry that he finds himself in front of Billy's dad's place. When Billy's dad sees Eddie, he invites Eddie in for a Coke. Eddie starts talking to Billy's dad, telling him what Tarter said and how much Eddie misses and needs Billy. When Eddie realizes he's talking for the first time in months, he says he only wants...
