Chapter 4 Summary

While Eddie is drying off in his room, Tarter comes in to talk to him. Tarter says that Mrs. Proffit is concerned about Eddie—from his whimpering in his sleep to being mute. Tarter asks Eddie is he is familiar with the bible story about Job, which is where God destroys Job's entire family and then when Job doesn't complain, God gives him a new family. Tarter suggests Eddie think about being baptized.

When Tarter leaves, Eddie's mind starts bouncing around like it always does. His thoughts rest on the sledding hill as he drifts off to sleep. This is when Billy steps in to ask if he can sled down the hill with Eddie. After sliding down the first time, Eddie asks Billy if he ever sees his dad.
