Chapter 8 Summary

In Chapter Eight, Temple has stopped to work for a man with a huge berry patch, picking berries in return for a share of them. Maury is chopping wood for the man in return for eggs. Temple learns they are in Alabama and has to force the man to give them their share of the food they were promised. In Mississippi they find a huge museum and break in, spending a little time there. When they stop to sleep at night, Temple often sleeps with her head on Maury's chest, comforted by the sound of his heartbeat.

One day Temple sees a huge, loping being on the road. She immediately believes it to be a meatskin but it reacts to her car by hiding, indicating it is not a zombie. She wonders what it could be and goes to investigate. She follows it...
