Chapters 21-25 Summary

Penn returns to the hotel and has a discussion with Caitlin about John Portman and his hatred for Penn. Portman had allowed Hanratty to kill again while in the witness protection program and hated Penn for keeping the killer in Texas and not allowing him to be extradited to L.A. to save face. After they talk, Caitlin watches TV and Penn thinks about Livy and their youth. Caught up in the way Livy was and the way things might have been, Penn is stirred from his reverie when Caitlin asks if he is thinking about Livy and then goes to her room. Penn does not kiss her, caught up in thoughts of Livy.

In chapter 22 Penn arrives in Colorado with Caitlin and Annie. Agent Stone does not want to talk about the Payton case but gives some of his time when Penn tells him...
