Summary

Anna has spent the night with Ah Quee. She wakes in the morning with a woolen cape over her. She watches him fuss over breakfast and tend to the fire. She is content with him.

Staines arrives at the camp station and is surprised to see that the Aurora’s box is flagged. When the box is unlocked, he finds smelted gold bars. He is alarmed by this find and wants to get rid of the gold. He pays the escort to turn his back while he transfers the contents of the box.

Staines buries the gold bars in the Arahura Valley. It is inhabited by the natives who do not have any use for gold so it should be safe. He arranges stones on top so that he can recognize where they are hidden and kicks away his footprints. He does not...
