Summary

The next chapter is titled “Letters from a Midnight Wood” and opens with Nannerl waking abruptly the next morning. She remembers that the princess in the tower “had my face, formed by my imagination” (225). She goes over what she knows, including that the young prince was never found, and comes to believe that Woferl is that prince. She believes that Hyacinth's entire plan had always been to claim Woferl's soul, as he had just claimed the princess. They begin to hear reports of a plague and Woferl recounts the stories of Herr von Grimm about a beast that is killing people. (They met Herr von Grimm during a recent performance, and he was complimentary of Woferl and Nannerl.) Nannerl knows the beast is Hyacinth. She is torn now between her wish...
