It was Christmas time, and the investigation began to slow. Smiley made a request to the Cousins for more information on Ricardo, but that, too, was delayed by the holiday. Sam Collins returns to the Circus in January, though there was no one to greet him, and he ended up cooling his heels in a dank office for many hours.
