Major Mandella, 2458-3142 A.D., Chapter 1 Summary

Mandella is shipped directly to Stargate on a journey that takes almost one hundred subjective years. Immediately upon his arrival he is placed in the "can" which is an "accelerated life situation computer" where he spends three weeks literally absorbing electronic information about war history, combat, fighting techniques, and logistical and tactical training. After two weeks of necessary healing immediately following the session, Mandella, who is now around 450 subjective years old, is given an appointment with Colonel Jack Kynock at the officer's bar for "temporal orientation." The purpose of this meeting is to familiarize him with present day military and social standards as well as prepare him for command. By the time Kynock arrives to meet with him, Mandella is well into his seventh beer and less than concerned about whether or not the meeting takes place...
