Chapter 5 Summary

Mallory asks if Jared thinks a faerie tied her hair to the bedpost, since their mother thinks that Jared did it. Mallory has her doubts on who actually committed the crime. At dinner, Mom is quiet as she serves the family food, while Simon is babbling about his new tadpoles. Then, Jared asks if they have a relative named Arthur, and what is the significance of the name of Spiderwick. Mom says that Spiderwick is great-aunt Lucinda's maiden name. The big shock to mom is that Jared reveals that he found out about the Spiderwick name by going up into the attic. Obviously, Mom is concerned that Jared could fall through the floor in a weak spot. This fear is on top of all the suspicions that Mom has about the recent weird events and Jared.
