The Moore's Washington, D.C. house kitchen

“Chapter 1: Two Years Earlier : Washington, D.C." describes Dexter and Kate's kitchen in their Washington, D.C. home. All the cabinets were warped. They needed to renovate the kitchen, but could not afford to do so. The cabinets were so warped that it made the kitchen dangerous. Dexter clamped corners of the counter top to the cabinets to hold it in place, but the clamps also caused problems. Dexter picks the most problematic room in their home to pitch the idea of moving to Luxembourg to Kate. His promise to make enough money for them to travel Europe seemed preposterous in this shabby kitchen that he could not repair manually or by making enough money in the U.S. The kitchen setting shows the contrast between the life the Moores live at the beginning of their story and the life he promises...
