Chapter 15 Summary

At 6 a.m., Melinda wakes Qwill when she phones to tell him that Penelope has committed suicide. Though Qwill is upset, he is not surprised, and he distracts himself that morning and afternoon by typing catalog cards for Mrs. Cobb. After work, Melinda visits and tells Qwill that Alex is taking his sister's death very hard and is upset at himself for being at a bachelor party last night instead of at home. Penelope died at 2 a.m. and did not leave a note. After dinner, as Qwill walks down Goodwinter Boulevard, Amanda invites him in, and he ponders whether Penelope really committed suicide, leaving Amanda wondering if her cousin was murdered. Qwill asks Amanda to keep his suspicions secret and to phone him if she thinks of a possible clue. In the morning, following a night of fitful sleep, Qwill continues typing...
