Chapter 1 Summary

It's the first day of their senior year, and best friends Lali and Carrie are driving to school. Bradley received a letter denying her to a writing program. She didn't tell anyone she applied or that she'd been denied. On the way to school, Lali tells Carrie there is a new boy in school, Sebastian Kydd. Carrie hears it again from Cynthia and Walt, classmates of hers, in the hallway. Cynthia says he was kicked out of private school for dealing drugs.

Carrie remembers her first encounter with Sebastian Kydd. She was twelve and into feminism. Carrie's mother was remodeling the Kydds' kitchen. Carrie blurted out that an author she was reading says every form of sex is rape. She thinks that the author clearly hadn't met someone like Sebastian Kydd because it was love at first sight for Carrie.
