Chapter 5 Summary

On Sunday, the ladies are preparing to go to the outing. Freda has wrapped two cooked chickens in foil. She asks Brenda for money for cigarettes, but Brenda lies and tells her she has no money. Actually, Brenda is saving her coins in case of a disaster, in case she has to find her way back from the outing alone.

They walk to the factory and see that the men are standing along the wall of the factory, waiting for the van to arrive. The van should have arrived fifteen minutes before and everyone is getting worried. Freda had made the reservation for the van, which Amelio, one of the employees, was to be picking up that morning.
