Chapter 2 Summary

As the two women walk to work, we learn another one of Brenda's strange habits. She puts layers of newspaper between her layers of clothing to keep warm. Freda is embarrassed and does not want to be seen walking in the street together with Brenda and makes her run along in front. As they arrive at the wine factory, Freda takes pleasure in shaking hands with each of the Italian men working there. It is a ritual that Brenda can barely stand but Freda revels in. It is her first chance of each day to make initial contact with her beloved Vittorio. All of the Italian men in the factory have worked there for many years and none of them speak English except for Vittorio and Rossi, the manager. The rest can only.....
