Liesel is taken to the police station where Frau Hermann comes and takes her home. Liesel is in shock and refuses to take a bath or to eat. Frau Hermann cares for Liesel the best she can. Herr Steiner returns from the war upon the news of his family's deaths. Liesel and Herr Steiner forge a close friendship in their mutual grief. Liesel begins to work for Herr Steiner in his tailor's shop. It is here that Max finds her when the war has ended.
