Ben freezes and he notices that all of Meeks's manlike features and clothing are more like that of an enraged animal now. Meeks comes at Ben, but then when Ben looks again, Meeks is gone. Ben follows the trail out of the forest that he took in to cross over to Landover the previous year.

Ben takes out the stone that Willow gave him, but it isn't glowing red, so he realizes that it definitely wasn't Meeks he saw. Thirty minutes later, Ben is at the courtesy phone off the trail. It's raining when he reaches for the phone in hopes that it's working. It is, so he calls for a car service to pick him up with the credit card and coins he has in his duffel bag.
