Part 2: Chapters 31-34 Summary
In Chapter 31, Paul arrives in Germany. Hearing there has been a murder at Danya's house, he quickly rushes to Danya's home. Once he arrives, Fritz Pannik, a federal investigator, explains that a woman is the suspect for Danya's murder. Paul assures Pannik that Rachel does not match the murderesses description. Paul fills Pannik in on Suzanne, Karol's letters, and the Amber Room. As the two men talk, Pannik is notified about an explosion in the Hartz Mountain caves. Rachel has been found hurt, but alive.
Paul is relieved to find Rachel alive at the beginning of Chapter 32, but he chastises her for rushing off to Germany and trusting Knoll. Rachel explains that Knoll saved her live and seemed like a kind man. Pannik alerts Rachel and Paul that there were never explosives in the Hartz Mountains an d so it is strange that there was an explosion...
