Summary

In 32: Winners and Losers, supplies for the Spencer family begin to stockpile at the Mills’s house. Mrs. Spencer arrives and offers the family a surplus of donations, including dresses and shoes for Stella. Mrs. Spencer also gifts Stella a typewriter, and Stella is speechless with happiness. At school that day, everyone discusses the fire. Mrs. Grayson addresses the horror of the fire to her class. She then announces which essays were chosen for the writing contest. Stella secretly hopes hers was selected, but doesn’t say anything. The high school selection goes to Helen Spencer, the middle grades entry goes to Carolyn Malone, and the lower grades entry goes to Claudia Odom.
