Summary

In 20: The Cow With No Head, Stella and her family wake up in the middle of the night to hear Jojo screaming. They find Jojo outside and demand to know what’s wrong. He claims he has seen a cow with no head. They search for the source of his panic and find that it is, indeed, a cow--but that it has a white body and a black head, making it appear invisible. Jojo is scolded for causing a fright when everyone is concerned about the Klan. Stella comforts Jojo, telling him that things scare her too and that “the older you get, the scarier the world gets to be” (123).

In 21: Papa’s Standing Stone, it is the next morning. Papa tells Stella that instead of going to school, she is coming...
