Summary

In 13: Sweet Potato Pie and Fried Green Tomatoes, Stella heads inside to help Mama, who is cooking in the kitchen. She marvels at her mother’s ability to tackle many tasks at once. Other children arrive, bringing food that their parents have cooked, and “soon the makeshift table was overflowing with food” (81). The children participate in a game of capture the flag, in which Stella triumphs.

Everyone feasts while Spoon Man walks around offering his wares to the people of the town. Stella notices her mother buy the purple glass bracelet and is thrilled. Soon, Spoon Man comes and sits next to Stella and asks her about school. He also asks how she feels having witnessed the Klan meeting. Spoon Man encourages Stella to write down her complicated thoughts...
