Relationships

One of the primary themes running through the novel is relationships. The novel reveals that even the individuals that make up a family have different relationships among the family members. For example, Sebastian, who is living as Rei, denies his claim to the avian throne and chooses instead to live in serpiente land.

Friendship is another type of relationship the novel tackles. While Rei works for Danica, they also have a special bond and friendship. Danica is grateful to Rei for all of the times he has protected her and saved her life. It turns out that one of the reasons the two are so close is that Rei is really Danica's childhood friend, Sebastian. It seems as if many of the various characters throughout the novel are more than just close friends or members of the society, but instead are more like family.
