Summary

In Chapter 11, Diana continues to work in a room set aside for a woman who concocts herbs while Philippe summons Matthew to the hay barn. When Diana realizes something is going on, she goes to the barn where Matthew and Philippe are fighting with swords. When Matthew discovers Diana among the crowd, he lets down his guard for a split second and Philippe has a knife at his throat. When Matthew's attention wavers again, Philippe stabs him. Soon, Matthew is in a state Philippe calls “blood rage.” Philippe says Ysabeau passed it down to both Matthew and his (vampire) sister, Louisa, and that it makes him focused only on food and killing. Matthew becomes less controlled when he hears Diana's distressed voice. Philippe pushes Matthew to the breaking point and clearly wins their fight.
