Rose Hathaway

Rose Hathaway is the main character of this novel. Rose is a dhampir, half human and half Moroi vampire, and is in training to become a guardian, a type of bodyguard, to a Moroi vampire. Rose is already aware that upon graduation she will become guardian to her best friend, Lissa, along with her guardian instructor, Dimitri Belikov. This is because Rose and Lissa have a mental connection that began when Lissa brought Rose back from the dead after a car accident that also killed Lissa's parents and brother.

Rose has recently returned to school after killing two Strigoi who kidnapped her and several of her classmates from the academy during an ill-advised trip to Colorado. Rose's friend and romantic interest, Mason, was killed during this episode. Therefore, when Rose begins to see Mason around campus, she thinks that it is stress that is causing the sightings...
