Summary

Chaos erupts when Bhyro Singh dies. The guards cut Kalua loose and drag him across the deck, but the captain demands a lawful execution, not lynching. The Indian guards won’t quit, however, and finally the captain and Mr. Crowle fire their shotguns. The guards back away from Kalua’s body. The captain has started to feel sick and he gives the ship over to Mr. Crowle. A storm brings 20-foot waves. Paulette dresses as a lascar and goes to talk to Zachary. Surprised, Zachary is humiliated and accuses Paulette of being an impersonator. She says that she knows he’s black and that he’s the same as her. She starts crying and turns to leave, but Zachary reaches for her and feels attracted to her even though she’s dressed as a man.
