Summary

Chapter 17

(Flashback)

Eric thinks back to the days while Justin was held captive. He had his class do a project about a white girl who’d been captured by Indians and kept for ten years. She became one of them. She forgot where she came from and when she was “rescued,” she starved herself to death because they wouldn’t let her go back to the Indians. Laura had been worried that Justin would end up that way too, but Eric assured her it was a different situation. During those first years, Eric had been called at school to come to a store where Laura had broken a shell and cut her hands all over with the shards. She had been sitting in the floor of the store bleeding and crying.
