Summary

Chapter 25 opens with Abeo dreaming that she is a slave in the Elmina Castle who bursts through The Door of No Return and becomes a whale the color of a rainbow. She has lost the memories of her former life and only has her dreams. Sometimes she questions whether she is real. She is 11 years old and bathing in the river when she first gets her period. The other girls tell Abeo she has become a woman, but she doesn’t understand. Duma is sitting on the bank watching the girls, but they hope he hasn’t seen the blood. They tell Abeo they will try to protect her secret. They do try, but Duma saw Abeo bleeding the first day at the river. After her third cycle, Darkwa comes to get her. She receives a ritual bath.
