Chapter 9 Summary

Lt. March makes the dive to the Starbuck with Dirk. March takes pictures of the submarine as they examine it. He is increasing fearful as Dirk wants to examine the escape hatch. Together, they finally open it. Dirk's plan is to enter the ship through the escape hatch, in spite of an angry and nervous March, by reversing the escape hatch procedure. They are successful and enter the sub. They find the forward torpedo room empty and one of the nuclear reactors still operating, which is why they have breathable air. Pitt tells March that he takes full responsibility for their actions and wants to explore the sub. They find the engine room with the nuclear reactors, one of which is still functioning.
