The next morning Dirk is awakened by his boss, Admiral James Sandecker, Chief Director of the Naval Underwater and Marine Agency, who has flown out from Washington. He informs Pitt that he is on special loan to the Navy, by special request of Admiral Hunter. In the past thirty years the Navy has documented thirty-eight ships missing in the area where the Starbuck disappeared.
