Chapter 2 Summary

This chapter contains excerpts from the Starbuck's log. Commander Dupree claims responsibility for the decision that took the ship off of its assigned course to investigate the fog bank. He relates the story of an explosion under the ship that caused it to sink. Dupree and the explosion survivors stayed in the secure areas of the sub, where he writes the log, telling of no food, water or air. He rambles on about ordering the doctor to give them all lethal injections to save them from suffering, of tapping on the hull; "they" were there again, etc. The Admiral wonders why Dupree wants the log delivered to him.
