Conspiracy

The theme of conspiracy is one of the most prevalent themes in the book. Most of the main characters are involved in some kind of conspiracy and this is what contributes to the flavor of intrigue and suspense throughout the novel. The reader waits to see who teams up with whom and for what purpose.

The biggest conspiracy is the team of Gornt and Linc Bartlett in the short-selling and stock manipulation scheme. Par-Con has entered into business deals with both Gornt and Ian. Linc has given Gornt a two million dollar Swiss bank account to lead the attack on the Struan stock. The short selling forces the price of the stock down at a time when Ian needs cash for other business deals. Even though Casey favors Dunross, Linc keeps the attack on the stock going and will support whoever wins, Gornt or Ian.
