Summary

In the section “Down in the Valley,” in his narration, Todd describes how he tries to convince Viola he would have fired the missile if he had been in her shoes but she still worries because she did it only to save him. She believes that makes both of them dangerous. Especially so since Todd was safe and the soldiers were out of danger when she fired the missile. When Todd notices how bad Viola looks, he asks her if she is okay. She does not tell him how infected the band has become.

In Todd’s narration, in the days that follow that attack, a boy named James who is in charge of taking care of the horses begins to befriend Todd. Also during that time, Mr. Shaw, a man who represents the people of the town approaches...
