Forks, Washington is a quiet small town where Bella Swan relocates as a result of her mother's remarriage. Bella enrolls in high school at Forks and finds typical teenagers vying for the new girl's attention. However, she also notices a group of outliers: the Cullens. The Cullens, who are vampires, settle on the outskirts of Forks as the weather is usually overcast and dreary, ideal for vampires who eschew the sun. As vampires, they must stay out of the sunlight in order to avoid being identified. Additionally, Forks serves as a superior location for vampires as there is an abundance of wilderness which provides hunting grounds for the Cullens as they only feed off of animal blood.
