Summary

The first chapter of the work, "First Sight," begins with Edward Cullen, a vampire masquerading as a high school student, observing the response of the student body a newly enrolled student. As Edward has the capacity to read the thoughts of others, he scoffs at the human fanfare over Isabella Swan's arrival. Yet Edward is immediately intrigued as he cannot read Bella's thoughts and feels oddly protective of her. He dismisses his concern until she appears in his class and he finds her scent "the sweetest blood" he has ever smelled (10). He tries to compose himself but his primal urges overpower him and he considers killing everyone in the room in order to drink Bella's blood.
