Section 2: Chapter 2 Summary

Fifteen minutes later, Turquoise and Ravyn sit at a table in Jillian's hotel room as she shows them a copy of a painting made in 1690 which focuses on an intimidating building. Jillian explains that in the early 1600s, two vampire sisters founded an empire, Midnight, and this building was the heart of their power. The determination of the ruthless sisters allowed them to take control quickly, and Jeshickah was the absolute ruler of Midnight, controlling all vampires, shapeshifters and witches for several centuries and treating humans like cattle. Midnight was destroyed in the early 1800s, and the slave trade was banned; however, laws have slackened over time, and some of the original vampires of Midnight have been able to pick up the trade again.
