Relationships

One of the primary themes running through the novel is relationships. The novel reveals that even the individuals that make up a family have different relationships among the family members. For example, Naomi and her father have a closer relationship than Naomi and her mother. Naomi and her mother, however, have a unique relationship of their own.

Friendship is another type of relationship the novel tackles. First, Will and Naomi are best friends, but there is a fine line between their friendship and their romantic love for each other. It seems as if Alice and Naomi were very close friends in elementary school. After Naomi becomes one of the popular people in high school, however, Alice stops being friends with Naomi. The two girls resume their relationship, however, in high school when they put on the school play together.
