Chapter 1 Summary

In Chapter 1, the narrator and main character, Naomi Porter, opens the novel by announcing that she is an orphan adopted from Russia when she was just a few weeks old. She also reveals that she has amnesia from an accident, where she fell down the stairs at school, when she goes back to retrieve a camera that her and her best friend, and co-editors of the high school yearbook left behind. Naomi describes the pain she feels in her head as she rides in the ambulance with someone who says he's her boyfriend, but she doesn't recognize. The boy who says he is Naomi's boyfriend, James, is not really her boyfriend and confesses this to her after they arrive at the hospital. Naomi's father arrives in the ER and James slips out.
