In the summer of 1969, two years after her accident, Joni takes inventory of her spiritual life and finds it mainly lacking. She still questions why God allowed such a horrible turn in her life. Her devoted friend, Diana, is always nearby to support Joni and help in her journey to God. Diana announces that she is having a friend stop by. His name is Steve Estes, a sixteen-year-old who is spiritually gifted and mature beyond his years. At first Joni is put off by his youth, but she is willing to meet with him.
