Chapter 7

Joni and her parents arrive by air in California. Joni tries not to have her expectations too high in case Rancho is a disappointment like Greenoaks was. But Rancho Los Amigos is beautiful and well-staffed. Jay and her daughter Kay rent an apartment near the rehab facility. Joni's parents stay long enough to get her settled. After a week at the facility, Joni is pleasantly surprised by a visit from Diana, Dick and Jackie. They had driven cross country to see her and plan to stay a few days. To Joni's delight, their few days turned into three weeks.

Therapy at Rancho begins immediately and focuses on getting Joni as independent as possible. Much work is done teaching Joni to use her shoulder and upper back muscles to get her arms to move. They fit Joni with first...
