Chapter 5 Summary

Smithy Fountain sends a text message to the headmistress of her school to let her she is going home for good. Smithy wonders if she is marked for bailing on her family just as Tris is marked for killing both of his parents.

As Madison faces the producer and her aunt, she realizes that her aunt has once again called in the media to exploit the situation. Madison walks into the kitchen and then upstairs to her room, realizing that her aunt has changed the house to suit her taste and all traces of Laura Fountain are gone.

Dr. Dresser, the school headmistress, calls Kate into her office. She tells Kate that Smithy ran away home and asks if Kate knew about Smithy's plan. Kate cannot believe that after everything she has done for Smithy that Smithy has betrayed her like this.
