Ortzog's Chains

Ortzog carries two chains which are apparently one chain that has been broken in half as a symbol of independence, as opposed to servitude. Modern American readers might equate this symbol with the chains that were used during slavery, making the symbolism of the broken chains more evident.

The Children

The children are symbolic of the continuation of Simlane. They are an entire generation of children, birthed by the Great Mother. The children are vital to the successful continuation of the race, and the normal course of creating that generation has failed. The children are also symbolic of Valerian's sexual encounter with the Great Mother, which makes Laureline angry.
