Summary

One of the delegates begins to introduce the heroes to the people gathered. He begins with Irmgaal from Krahan, “the planet of the great black warriors” (11). Irmgaal makes a display of pledging that he will be “merciless” (11). He uses his sword, named Zarkam, to strike a huge boulder-like object, smashing it to bits. The people in the crowd yell out that his actions are “lame” and “wasteful” (11). He marches off as rubble settles in the background. The delegate next introduces Ortzog from Boornyof, known for its industry. Ortzog gives a speech about democracy, freedom, and liberty, showing a set of chains that have been broken to represent an end of servitude. He promises to save Simlane's future, though he does not agree with their ideals. He then slashes a huge column with one of this chains, making it collapse.
