Samantha (Sam)

Samantha is the main character of the story. She starts out as a successful lawyer in New York. However, due to the recession, she soon finds herself furloughed, with no other option but to work for a charity firm for a year. Sam is shown to be an incredibly hard worker at the firm. She mentions several times that for the last few years she hasn’t had anything resembling a social life because she’s always working long hours. When Sam is furloughed, she realizes that she hated her job. She didn’t like the clients she was working for, or the long hours that she kept putting in. The pay was good, but that didn’t matter because she never actually got to spend the money doing things that she enjoyed.
