Isabella resumes her duties as embassy hostess with all her former enthusiasm and mentions to her father that she would like to stay in London to complete her thesis instead of returning to Weltevreden with him when his term is done. He is unable to find an argument she hasn't thought through, but despite her desire to stay with Ramon, it is hard for Bella to say goodbye to the family when the ship sails.
