Summary

George is narrated in the third-person past. In the first chapter, “Secrets,” the ten-year-old main character, George, got home from school. George made sure that her mother and brother were not home, then went into her bedroom and looked in the closet, which was full of stuffed animals her mother said should be donated. However, George used the stuffed animals to guard her secret collection of teen girl fashion and lifestyle magazines, which she kept in a denim bag beneath the stuffed animals. She took the bag out and brought it into the bathroom with her.

She liked to look at the pictures of pretty girls and pretend that they were her friends. She liked to imagine she could hang out with them and fit in with them. She imagined her name was Melissa and she had long hair her friends would braid...
