A couple of days later, the Starks guard arrest a deserter from the Night Guard. Lord Eddard Stark executes the deserter with a sword called Ice, while his two sons, Bran and Robb, and his illegitimate son, Jon, watch. After the execution they are riding back to town when Robb finds a mother direwolf lying dead on the snow. Next to the mother are five direwolf pups. At first, Lord Stark does not want to keep the pups but then Jon speaks up, saying there are three female and two male pups. Jon claims this is a sign for the Starks since their symbol is the direwolf and Lord Stark has three daughters and two sons, excluding Jon. Lord Stark thinks it over and agrees to keep the pups.
