Summary

After one week, Joaquin replies to the sisters' email. Maya thinks that his tone is too aloof, and already finds his response annoying. Maya is grounded for sneaking into Claire's house at night, and so she converses with Grace over the telephone. Maya likes that she makes Grace laugh with her dark jokes that no one else seems to get. Maya does not tell her parents much about meeting Joaquin, because she does not know how to put her emotions into words. Instead, she relates her emotions to colors: "the sunset pinks and reds of first love, the stormy blues that clouded her brain when she was hurt or angry" (61).
