Ada

Ada is the novel’s main character and narrator. Having grown up with her father who has a strong unwavering relationship with Christianity. Ada is the first daughter of her family, which in her culture is a role that is attached to lots of responsibility and weight, which she carries with a heavy heart since she does not feel like she can fulfill many of those expectations. She is a larger girl and has shame around not fitting the projected societal ideas of what a young woman ‘should’ look like based on how people treat her for her weight. She also endures turmoil at her school for the color of her skin and, being from Nigeria, she is ridiculed for her blackness and for her cultural difference from the status quo at her school.
