A farm boy of 15 who is growing up with his uncle and cousin, Eragon is named for the first Dragon Rider. Eragon discovers Saphira's egg when he is hunting in the Spine. He grows into early manhood while searching out the Ra'zac, the killers of his uncle. Eragon is trained by Brom, whom he discovers was once a Rider himself. Eragon grows from a boy who is prone to acting rashly, into a man who, with his dragon's help, saves a people.

Eragon is a sensitive young man who reacts with anger when he witnesses injustice. When he sees a slave auction, he has to hold his anger in check. He flaunts his magic while fighting Urgals and nearly dies. He learns to control his magic and his temper as well.
